Research – why and how

Why do we do research?

  • Effort
  • Knowledge
  • Audience
  • Do’s and Don’ts
  • Originality
  • Inspiration
  • Authenticity
  • Development
  • Accuracy
  • Got to do it!!

Primary and Secondary research.

There are 2 types of research, primary and secondary.

Primary:

(From you?)

  • Talking/interviews
  • Work experience
  • Practice/experimentation
  • Questionnaires/surveys

When doing questionnaires or surveys, there are 2 types of data, quantitative and qualitative. Quantitative data is looking at the numbers and measuring them. Qualitative data is opinions and interpretation.

Secondary:

(From elsewhere)

  • Reading online
  • Books
  • Newspapers
  • Magazines

It is important to do both types of research. This is because primary research because the research isn’t already done. Doing the research yourself means you will find out first hand all the information you need.

However, secondary data can be important because already existing data can show you more of a varied opinion and research ideas.
